Editing

Developmental editing: Helping authors develop the fundamental themes, structure, format, and argument of their work; offering advice and feedback throughout the writing process; rewriting as required.
Substantive editing: Revising and reordering sentences, paragraphs, and even chapters to bolster clarity, readability, and strength of argument—plus copyediting.
Copyediting: Correcting spelling, syntax, and grammar; imposing stylistic consistency; examining arguments, facts, and style and suggesting revisions.

Writing and rewriting

Creating or revising material of all kinds—from video scripts to marketing copy, reports, and book-length manuscripts—to catch and hold the attention of specific audiences.

Proofreading

Finding and fixing typographical, stylistic, grammatical, and other mistakes. Proofing for conformity with the client’s preferred style (AP, CMS, etc.).

Project
management

Piloting a project through inception, writing, and/or production; liaising with authors, publishers, and printers; recruiting and managing support staff (researchers, editors, designers, etc.) as required.

Design and
layout

Designing interiors and covers for books and reports; laying out pages according to specs; conducting photo research; creating or redrawing charts, tables, and figures.

Indexing

Creating an accurate, reliable index customized to meet the needs of author and readers.

Book
packaging

Turning your idea or manuscript into a high-quality published book or report; editing what you have written, creating or commissioning what you need, and laying out text and art in a design and format customized for you and your audience; managing production and printing; advising on distribution; devising and implementing a marketing strategy.

Printing

Offering expert advice on printing options; negotiating costs, specs, schedules, and shipping with printers; providing printers with final files; checking printer’s proofs; overseeing printing process and shipping.

I often create packages of two or more of these services, which enables me to take a more holistic approach to a project. It can also save a client money and the stress of juggling multiple vendors.
